Capacity Evaluation is about protection and help. For protection, the practitioner is assessing to what extent a person can do his own thing (finances, etc.). What can this person do for himself or what can we respect that he can do for himself? The help part is about how much help he needs, for example, the person may be able to live at home, but needs a home health aid with him at home every day for 4 hours and he also needs someone to do his finances. The goal is freedom and protection. The best situation for the client is that the practitioner is assessing the minimum amount of protection needed to ensure that it doesn’t intrude on the persons freedom more than necessary.
